As Australia’s largest water utility, providing water and wastewater services to over 4.9 million people in the greater Sydney region, Sydney Water’s key challenge is to meet the service demands of a rapidly growing population while containing or reducing water charges to its customers.
Optimal management of its AUD64b billion asset base is crucial to achieving this, and the adoption of a formalised Asset Management System (AMS) compliant with ISO 55001 was seen by the organisation and its regulator as a way to assure good practice and deliver increased value from its assets.
GHD Advisory was engaged to provide program management and technical leadership in the design, creation and implementation of the AMS within the tight deadlines imposed on Sydney Water under its operating licence.
Our role included:
- Development of a detailed implementation plan to transition the organisation from its current state to ISO 55001 compliance within a six month period
- Development of the structure and content of the strategic asset management plan
- Development of a suite of asset management objectives and associated performance metrics
- Establishment of a governance structure and corresponding terms of reference, including documentation of roles and responsibilities for key functions
- Identification of non-conformances and corrective actions, including the development of an asset management improvement plan
- Review of enabling functions including resourcing, competence management, outsourcing and asset information
- Development and implementation of internal audit and management review programs and plans
- Facilitating integration of the AMS with other management systems including quality, environment and safety.
The AMS received formal certification in March 2019.
