334 acres of land that were owned and operated by the former General Motors Corp (GMC) will be transformed into a new public park destination for hiking, fishing, wildlife watching and other light recreation. Under GMC, the site was the location of the Saginaw Malleable Iron Plant, which operated a 1 million square foot foundry that casted and heat-treated iron for 100 years from 1907 to 2007. Other features at the site included two small closed Type III landfills, the large Greenpoint Landfill, and a large pond, previously used for settling foundry sand slurries.
GHD’s team worked to conduct sewer investigations and remediation related to PCBs (sewer abandonment, sleeving, etc.), PCB investigations within the operational areas and cleanups (Melting Department Area), construction and monitoring of wetland mitigation area, and LNAPL investigations and remediation (recovery and ongoing monitoring).
